The topic of whether or not a talented independent artist should sign to a major label is always a contentious issue. So imagine my shock when I found out one of my favourite inde artists’, Dom Kennedy is allegedly getting signed to MMG and Interscope.   Like all diehard fans I instantly assumed this was the beginning of the end of his music career. Now with the benefit of hindsight I know this reaction was a bit over kill and lost me a couple gangster points, however it got me wondering why we as the audience generally believe that when a successful independent artist gets signed it is somehow a bad thing.

Two weeks ago I threw out an idea of what constituted good poetry. Is it necessary to employ certain rhyme patterns, meter, or syllable patterns? No, not at all. One can easily write a poem in a free verse format and still create the necessary imagery to make an impact, though even free verse will often take on a natural flow of its own. Despite this, the arguments for strict rhyme and meter remain prevalent with more than just a few people.
